Senior Independent Director of Alcazar Energy

Dr Ranald Spiers has spent thirty-five years in the energy industry, most of it overseas. He is currently the Senior Independent Director of Alcazar Energy, an independent developer and power producer focused on mid-market renewable electricity generation in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa region.

His last full-time employment was with International Power plc, where he was a Main Board member and Executive Director for the Middle East, Africa and Asia regions, based in Abu Dhabi and Singapore. He was responsible for managing all aspects of performance for the three regions, including plant operations, finance and the development, financing and construction of new power generation and water desalination assets. He resigned from the International Power board in January 2011, following the take-over of International Power by GDF Suez (now ENGIE) of France, and retired from the new combined company in June 2011. His last role was President and CEO, Asia, based in Bangkok.

Prior to his appointment to the Board, Dr Spiers was Chief Executive Officer, Middle East & Africa Region, International Power plc, based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where he was responsible for the development, financing, construction and operation of power and water desalination assets in the Middle East and Africa. During his time in the Middle East, International Power became the largest private power developer in the region, operating a portfolio of assets with an enterprise value of around US$10bn.

Prior to the de-merger of National Power PLC in October 2000, he was RegionalDirector for the Middle East Turkey and Southern Africa. From 1996 to 1997, he was Regional Director for India. He joined National Power in 1992, focusing on business development in Italy, Turkey, Holland and India. He previously spent twelve years with the BP Group – including four years in the USA, where he represented BP on both the US Council for International Business and the Council of the Americas – across a wide spectrum of industries, including advanced materials and aerospace, petrochemicals, detergents, natural gas and oil refining. He has a B.Sc in Chemistry from Edinburgh University, an MBA in International Business from City University in London, and a Ph.D in Chemistry from Pembroke College, Cambridge University.

Dr Spiers is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and a Chartered Chemist (CChem).
